Data Science Academy
Run by the Wharton Global Youth Program, the Wharton Academy of Data Science will bring state of-the-art machine learning and data science tools to high school students. We aim to stimulate students’ curiosity in the fast-moving field of machine learning through this rigorous yet approachable program. Building up statistical foundations together with empirical and critical thinking skills will be the main theme throughout. By the end of the program, students will not only be equipped with essential data science techniques such as data visualization and data wrangling but will also be exposed to modern machine learning methodologies which are all building blocks for today’s AI field. Along the way, students will develop a working proficiency with the R language, which is among the most widely used by professional data scientists in both academia and industry.
The Future of the Business World online course is a dynamic learning experience for exceptional high school students from around the world. It is designed to introduce students to areas of research by the Wharton faculty and engage them as the next generation of global business leaders. Students attend live daily online events and work independently. Ultimately, they use all the ideas and insights from the course to create final projects that make predictions about the future of the business world. This new course is a chance for students to begin to identify interests and lay the foundation for future education and career goals.
The course conversation is anchored by the idea that while the world is constantly changing, COVID-19 has greatly accelerated that change, propelling the business world into uncharted territory. Students gain new knowledge guided by the pillars of a Wharton education: Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Data Analytics; and the Future of Finance. Throughout the experience, students are asked to contribute their points of view to the learning. The fully online course includes mini-lectures from Wharton faculty, opportunities for live engagements with faculty and Wharton instructors, collaborative projects with peers around the world, and original online real-time business simulations
Sponsored by the Wharton Sports Analytics and Business Initiative (WSABI), Wharton Moneyball Academy: Training Camp is a one-week program broadly introducing students to statistics through a sports lens. This program welcomes talented high school sophomores, juniors and seniors intrigued by statistics. Students applying to this program should have strong math skills and an interest in sports. The summer experience serves as an entrée into the sports statistics world as it is not heavily focused on computing but rather the fundamental principles of sports statistics. Wharton professor Adi Wyner in conjunction with PhD students will teach the program.
Essentials of Leadership is an intensive, two-week summer opportunity for a select group of rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors seeking an introduction to outstanding undergraduate business education. Participants will develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, while learning from and collaborating with Wharton faculty, guest speakers, and other talented high school students from around the world. This new online experience involves case competitions and interactive digital simulations, including the Saturn Parable, an advanced leadership simulation from Wharton Interactive.
Wharton Essentials of Innovation introduces hands-on experiences in all aspects of the venture creation process. Working in teams, students will generate a new business idea, assess its profit potential, build an innovative model, and test and iterate as they drive toward product-market fit. The program culminates in “pitch day,” where teams will have the opportunity to present their venture to investors and entrepreneurs who are active in the South Bay startup scene.
Throughout a 9-day schedule filled with lectures, activities, and company visits across Silicon Valley, students will develop a new appreciation of the joys and challenges that come with building a world-changing startup.
Academic classes are held Monday-Friday of week one, and Monday through Thursday of week two within the Wharton San Francisco academic campus. Extracurricular and social activities are available in the evenings and on weekends. Students move in on Sunday pre-program, and move out the final Friday of the program.
