The Medical Immersion Summer & Spring Academy (MISA) was founded in 2012 in Oakland, California by Dr. Freeman, an Emergency Medicine physician at Highland Hospital. MISA partners with local health institutions and clinicians in the area to bring this valuable experience to interested high school students.


MISA works to expose pre-med and pre-health high school students to hands-on clinical experience in a variety of healthcare settings that will provide them with a competitive edge as they begin their own career in health. Hands-on Clinical Training
In-depth workshops on Suturing, EKG, Splinting, Patient Vitals, Patient Simulation, Phlebotomy and Bedside Manner.
Certifications
Nationally recognized certifications for CPR, First Aid, Stop the Bleed, Teen Mental Health First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens.
Networking
The opportunity to connect with a myriad of health professionals as well as participate in professional development workshops.
On-campus, commuter
MISA is a 5-day program that runs Monday through Friday from 9-3:30pm at the MISA office in Oakland, California. Applicants can choose to apply to either a Spring or Summer Cohort both of which offer multiple programming dates.
The impact of Covid-19 on MISA Programs
Since the start of the pandemic, MISA has adjusted all programming in manner that prioritizes the safety of participants. All 2024 programming will continue to be held in-person following public health recommendations by Alameda County.
- Participants must be fully vaccinated
- Sanitation of common areas
- Mask wearing policies enforced
- Daily health screening questionnaire for all participants
- Participants must sit 6ft apart.

Interest in pursuing a healthcare career
Minimum age 15 by program start date or completion of freshman year
$50 non-refundable application fee
Interviewing for MISA
Participants will have to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination for MISA.
