These two week intensive language courses (35 hours over 10 days) are designed to give participants the opportunity to develop their foreign language and culture skills in a professional context.




Languages
We offer the following courses subject to availability.
- Arabic beginners
- BSL beginners
- French beginners
- Italian beginners
- German beginners
- Japanese beginners and intermediate
- Mandarin beginners and intermediate
- Spanish beginners and intermediate
The courses run from 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday with a 30-minute break during the summer.
Some courses are run online and others face-to-face.
The Summer Intensive Modern Foreign Language Courses are offered at two levels: beginners and intermediate.
If you are a complete beginner or have had only very little contact with the language, please choose beginner level.
If you have studied the language for e.g. one or two years (four hours per week or two hours per week respectively), please choose intermediate level.
We do not offer any advanced levels.
Beginner
Prerequisite for entry: For complete beginners or those who have had only very little contact with the language.
Aims and objectives: The aim of the course is to enable participants to function at a basic survival level covering professional/everyday areas/topics.
On completion of the course participants should be able to communicate in and understand the language on a number of professional and everyday matters. Language learning skills, including autonomous learning and how to approach authentic material, will be developed. Cultural awareness and some transferable skills will also be developed.
Intermediate
Prerequisite for entry: Successful completion of level 2 at the UCL CLIE or a similar recent course including experience of dealing with relevant authentic material.
Aims and objectives: The aim of the course is to enable students with a good basic knowledge of the language to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in professional situations.
On completion of the course participants will be able to converse reasonably fluently with native speakers and discuss personal, professional, social and current issues using appropriate structures. Cultural awareness will be further developed. Language learning skills, including autonomous learning and how to approach authentic material, will be enhanced. Some transferable skills will also be covered.
Tutors
Your tutor will be a native speaker, highly qualified and experienced in teaching their own language as a foreign language.
These courses are open to all aged 18 or over.
Complete and submit the online SIMFL application form, then pay the fees on the UCL online store.
A place on the course will only be confirmed upon receipt of full payment.

Places are subject to availability and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
How to pay
Online by credit/debit card
Payment should be made on the UCL online store after completing and submitting the online SIMFL application form.
Payment by UCL department
If a UCL department is funding the course please forward confirmation of funding to [email protected] before applying. This must be a letter/email from or correspondence with the authorising person confirming the department responsible, and it must include the department financial code and details of a contact person in the department. The funding will be taken electronically via an IDT before the course starts.
Payment by invoice/employer sponsorship
If your employer is funding the course please email [email protected] before applying.
Cancellations/refund policy
Cancellations before 05 June 2023 are eligible for a full refund.
Cancellations from 05 June 2023 and before 19 June 2023 are eligible for a refund of 50% of the fee paid.
From 19 June 2023 no refunds will be possible.
In the event that a course does not run then a full refund will be given.
Cancellations must be notified in writing by email to [email protected].
The UCL CLIE cannot accept responsibility for unforeseen changes in a participant's circumstances that may prevent attendance, except for serious illness that is supported by a doctor's note.
The UCL CLIE reserves the right to cancel a course, or replace a tutor if unavoidable.
