Students will earn a college credit upon completion of this enriching academic experience.

Students will meet online as a class for synchronous learning Saturday or Sunday for the duration of the six-week program. Students can choose one of the following courses:
1 - Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Thinking: Natural Places as Heritage
2 - Global Issues and Challenges
3 - Israels: Grasping the Multitudes of Israel
4 - Screen Performance in the 21st Century
5 - An Introduction to Greek and Roman Mythology

Format

Students will meet online as a class on Saturdays or Sundays for synchronous learning each week for the duration of the six-week program, with additional asynchronous learning requirements per week. Each course has specific day and time requirements, depending on the Global Gateway.

Program Details

An Introduction to Greek and Roman Mythology

The stories of ancient Greek and Roman myth are embedded in modern European culture, constantly being retold through paintings, plays, novels, films, etc. This course introduces you to the main characters of ancient Greek and Roman mythology, and to the main works of literature in which these stories are told. Along the way, we will touch on such issues as how much history is preserved in myth, and what myth is for.

Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Thinking: Natural Places as Heritage

The course will have a strong focus on group discussions with a mixture of lectures, presentations, documentaries and small group projects. Through classroom discussion and written work, you will develop the ability to articulate clear, well-supported, and persuasive arguments on the nature of heritage in its environmental context. By the end of the course you will be familiar with the world of UNESCO World Natural Heritage and the very important work it does with regard to the conservation of the environment.

Global Issues and Challenges

At no time since the end of the Cold War has our world looked more uncertain than today. World politics faces a series of global problems, some of which seem to mutually affect and exacerbate each other. Chief among them are climate change, terrorism, migration and refugee flows, and the global recession of democracy.
This course surveys these four inter-related issues by looking at scholarly debates around their origins. It will then examine each in a brief case study, and finally outline the contemporary efforts to tackle these challenges. The class will have a strong focus on group discussions and support these with a mix of lectures, films, and small group projects.

Israels: Grasping the Multitudes of Israel

The State of Israel, as a case study, can be characterized along two axes: The vertical one is time, from ancient history to current times. The horizontal one is a microcosm of regional and global major issues: religion and state relations, liberal democracy versus conservative values, majority- minority relations, immigrant and indigenous populations, economic disparity, inequality, and the collapse of traditional state institutions.
In each weekly session, the students and the instructor will visit a new topic regarding the Israeli reality. Each topic will be handled through the vertical and horizontal accesses mentioned above. The instructor will guide the students to look into the deep historic roots of the issues, and will then deconstruct the topics both in their significance within the heterogeneous Israeli society and as part of a larger global phenomenon.

Screen Performance in the 21st Century: How to Deconstruct Everything You Watch from TikTok to Wakanda Forever

In this course, students will be invited to deconstruct the performances they see on a variety of screens from their mobile phones to their local multiplexes. We will consider the content and context of a wide range of screen performances through different analytical "lenses" in order to discover meanings that we that we may not recognise at first glance. Students will respond to these performances through group discussions and brief individual critical essays.
