Academics

The Traditional Summer Institute
The W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars Institute normally consists of various academies for Pre-Scholars, who are rising 8th and 9th graders, and Scholars, who are rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Pre-Scholars, rising 8th and 9th graders, participate in one of two academies, the Junior Achievers Academy (for rising 8th graders) or the Fellows Mentoring Academy (for rising 9th graders). These pre-scholars receive four weeks of instruction. Classes meet Monday through Thursday, with each class meeting every day for 75 minutes. Students are in class from about 8:45am to 4:00pm. Fridays are reserved for field trips. Weekends consist of free-time. Scholars, rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders, participate in one of three academies, including the Engineering, Pre-Med/Biological Sciences, or Leadership Academy. These Scholars receive five weeks of instruction in university-level courses. Classes meet Monday through Thursday, with each class meeting every other day for 120 minutes. Students are in class from about 8:00am to 4:00pm. Fridays are reserved for field trips. Weekends consist of free-time.

Introducing the Accelerated Learning Academy
Eighty percent of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. depend upon mastery of mathematics and scientific knowledge and skills. Hone these skills in our new Accelerated Learning Academy!

The WEB Du Bois Scholars Institute has created the Accelerated Learning Academy (ALA) to bring welcome and much-needed diversity to STEM studies and industries, especially for others who are underrepresented in these fields yet have a long history of achievement. The ALA provides an opportunity for high-achieving, forward-thinking 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th graders—students who will evolve into our next generation of engineers, software developers, mathematicians, architects, doctors and physicists—to explore STEM in new and exciting ways.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY
Residing in underserved communities can make youth more susceptible to succumbing to the negative influences they encounter. However, with motivation, resiliency, and mentorship, many of these youth can bypass these situations and become leaders in their respective schools and neighborhoods. Created in 2022, specifically for current 7th and 8th grade students, the Career Development Academy (CDA) strives to introduce participants to skills, tools, and a mindset necessary for successful academic growth, career preparation, planning, and advancement. This program aims to provide critical leadership and mentoring experience for these promising young people.

Format
